One booking, two days, and you choose which two. Six pairings are sold, food and a guide sit inside the fare, and the second day can wait up to a fortnight. It is the premium option here, and the only one on which you can stand in front of a pyramid.

Six pairings, two days, and a fortnight to use them

Which pairings are sold, and which ones reach the park

Six combinations exist. Two pair the eco-park with something else, and two pair Xel-Há with something else. One pairs Xplor with the pyramids, and one pairs Xel-Há with the dearer Xcaret Plus grade. Read that list twice before you book, because two of the six never bring you here at all. If the eco-park is the reason you are booking, pick a pairing with its name in it.

The three neighbours are not versions of each other. Xel-Há is a snorkelling inlet where the day is spent in the water. Xplor is built on ziplines, amphibious vehicles and swimming through caves. The pyramids are a guided visit to an archaeological site two and a half hours inland. Which one suits your party is the whole question, and the comparison of the three parks answers it in detail.

The Sunday problem, and other dates that do not work

Two of the four are not offered on Sundays: the pyramids and the adventure park both go dark. If your two free days are Saturday and Sunday, you have fewer pairings than the booking screen suggests, and the one you want may not be among them. Check the days before you check the fare.

The fifteen-day window is generous and worth using. You take one attraction a day, and the second can sit at the far end of a fortnight. That lets you put a long day in the water early in a holiday and the pyramids at the end of it, instead of two heavy days back to back. Date changes are accepted from one month to the next, and from one day to the next with a day's notice.

What is in the fare, and what is firmly outside it

Included: the guide, the meals and the drinks, and hotel pickup and drop-off. So is the use of snorkel equipment, against a $25 deposit that comes back, along with lockers, dressing rooms, showers and a towel. That last item is worth noting: on a neighbouring park Maribel M. found the lockers in one central spot and walked back each time.

Outside it: every animal encounter and every premium activity. Swimming with dolphins, stingray encounters, shark experiences, sea trek and snuba are all sold separately, and Steven L.'s advice after a good day is simply to know that going in. Height, weight and the checkpoint at the pyramids

The adventure park sets real limits. Nobody under five goes at all, and the ziplines ask for at least 137 cm or 40 kg, a maximum of 136 kg, a waist under 130 cm and a leg under 65 cm. If somebody in your party is outside those numbers, the day still works but the headline activity does not, and a pairing without it is the better booking.

At the archaeological site there are two checkpoints, one at the hotel pickup and one at the entrance. Anyone judged to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs is asked to come back another day. How the two days fit together

1. Book once, choose two. Pick your pairing on the booking screen; the fare covers both visits.
2. Day one, early pickup. Collection runs from your hotel or the nearest listed point on the route.
3. Expect a slow start. Dwaraka V. reached the gate an hour and a half to two hours after opening.
4. Eat on the fare. Meals and drinks are included on both days, which is what separates this from the entry ticket.
5. Choose your return. Kelli A. W. took a 4:30 p.m. return rather than staying for the evening one.
6. Leave a gap. The second visit can be the next day or up to a fortnight later.
7. Day two, somewhere else. The second attraction runs on its own schedule, with its own pickup.

What both days include

Where you are collected, and what can go wrong there

Pickup is offered from 90 listed points across Cancún, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. You confirm the exact time and place at least 24 hours before each visit: by message on a weekday, by telephone at the weekend. If you booked without a hotel name, supply one ahead of the day, or there is nowhere to collect you from.

The failure worth guarding against is a name that never reached the list. Yanli X. arrived on time and was not on it, and the morning went on phone calls instead of a coach. Know before you go

• Two of the four skip Sunday. Plan a pairing that does not need one, or take the second visit midweek.
• Check your pairing enters the park. Two of the six combinations never do; the name is on the option you select.
• Ziplines have hard limits. Under-fives cannot go, and there are minimum and maximum size rules on the lines.
• Encounters cost extra. Dolphins, rays, sharks, sea trek and snuba are all sold separately at the park.
• Confirm each pickup. Contact the booking 24 hours before each of the two days, not once at the start.
• Sobriety is checked at the site. There are two checkpoints on the pyramid day, and anyone impaired is asked to return another time.
