What $185 buys, and where the buffet sits

This product is sold in two grades, and the figure above is the cheaper one. It buys the coach both ways, entry to the park, the water — rivers, bays, beaches and natural pools, with life jackets and inner tubes — the loungers and hammocks, and the evening performance. Food and drink are not in it. The park's own exclusion line is blunt about that: nothing to eat or drink comes with the cheaper grade.

Upgrade and the day changes in three places. Xcaret Plus puts a buffet lunch on the table, opens the snorkel gear to you, and gives you the Plus Area, which John K. rated mostly for its own locker section. Decide at checkout. A card that quotes the lower figure and describes the upper one is the single easiest way to be disappointed here, and it is why the visitor guide sets the grades out in a table.

A 7 a.m. start and a finish long after dark

The coach window runs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the pickup time is set by where you are staying, not by you. Pajhua T. expected to choose it and did not. Confirm yours at least 24 hours ahead through your booking messages on a weekday, or by telephone at the weekend, when the operator answers by phone only.

Coming home takes longer than you think. The bus leaves the park at 10 p.m. once the performance ends, and the drop-off circuit works through the hotels one at a time: Bianca K. reached bed very late, and Ethan L. described the whole thing as running from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Book nothing for the following morning. If that sounds like too much day, the ticket on its own starts at $113 and lets you go when you like.

How the coach day runs, end to end

1. Early, at your hotel. The pickup is scheduled around your address; confirm it 24 hours ahead.
2. Find the red shirts. The guides wear red Xcaret shirts and call the name of the tour at the meeting point.
3. Wristbands on board. Yours is handed out during the drive south, so you walk straight in.
4. Water first, if you can. Marlen C. recommends taking the water activities before the crowds build.
5. Lunch, or your own plan. The buffet belongs to the dearer grade; at this one you pay inside.
6. Out of the rivers by 5:30. Floating closes then, and the dry attractions carry the rest of the afternoon.
7. The performance, then home. The bus pulls out at 10 p.m. and works round the hotels on the way back.

Where the bus finds you in Cancún

You give your hotel when you book, and the operator either collects you there or names the nearest point on its route. If you are in an apartment rather than a hotel, there are set public meeting points instead: Base Xcaret for Cancún, Plaza las Perlas for Playa del Carmen, Aloft Tulum for Tulum and Hotel Hacienda Morelos for Puerto Morelos. Give a full street address if your accommodation is not a hotel.

Two things save people at the kerb. The guides wear red shirts with the park's logo and call out the name of the tour, so you are looking for a shirt rather than a vehicle. Know before you go

• The meal is a grade, not an extra. You cannot buy the buffet onto the cheaper fare afterwards; pick it at checkout.
• Bring water shoes. Vanessa V. lists a towel, sunscreen, a water bottle and water shoes as the things to pack.
• Infants travel on a lap. Children under a metre travel free as long as they do not take a seat.
• There is a health check. Some river activities have a checkpoint before you go in; declare anything relevant there.
• Confirm the pickup yourself. Message the booking on a weekday or telephone at the weekend, at least 24 hours out.
• Plan a slow next morning. A 10 p.m. departure and a long drop-off circuit put most people in bed near midnight.
