Xcaret Tours and Tickets: Frequently Asked Questions
Tickets, timing, the rivers, the drive and the show, answered from Grupo Xcaret's own pages and the operators' listings. Weighing up xcaret tickets? The answers below settle most of it.
Two answers matter more than the rest. First, the operator publishes no price for any of its three tickets on its own site. Every figure you see quoted is a tour listing's, and which grade it buys is the question to ask. Second, the underground rivers close at 5:30 p.m. while the park runs to 10:30 p.m., so your day is shaped by when you arrive rather than by when you leave.

How much does it cost to get into the park?
Grupo Xcaret publishes no figure for any of its three tickets on its own site, so the only honest prices are the ones the tour listings quote. Those run from $113 for entry alone up to $280 for a two-day combination with transport and a guide. Which of the three tickets a figure buys matters more than the figure, and every card here says so.
What is the difference between Xcaret Basic and Xcaret Plus?
Basic buys the gate: the underground rivers, the beaches and bays, the aviary, the butterfly pavilion, the aquarium, the children's area and the evening show. Xcaret Plus adds a buffet lunch with a beer, the Plus Area with its private changing rooms and lockers, and a snorkel deposit of $10 instead of $25. The night ticket is a third thing again, and starts in the afternoon.
Does my tour fare include lunch?
Only if the fare buys the Plus ticket. Where a listing sells a choice of grade, its headline price is the cheaper one and food is excluded until you upgrade at booking — one traveller who missed that paid $45 a head for the buffet on the day. Every card here prints which grade its figure buys.
Can I cancel a tour?
Almost all of them: free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, with a full refund. The cenote day is the exception and is sold as final — no refund and no change for any reason — and its card states that on its own. Check the card before you book, not the site-wide rule.
Where is Xcaret?
At km 282 of Highway 307, the coast road between Cancún and Tulum, just south of Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo. The full address is Carretera Chetumal–Puerto Juárez km 282, Colonia Rancho Xcaret, Playa del Carmen 77580. There is one gate, and every tour and every ticket uses it.
How far is the park from Cancún?
Far enough that the coaches leave early: pickups from Cancún hotels run between 6:30 and 7:00 in the morning to reach the gate near opening. Those days are listed at 12 to 14 hours door to door, because the drive is bracketed by a hotel circuit at each end. You will be back late, after the show.
Do the tours include hotel pickup?
Most do, and their listings name the pickup as part of the fare. Two sell transport as a separate option you tick at booking, and the entry ticket excludes it outright. The card for each tour says which of the three it is, because it is the single biggest difference between the prices.
What time do the coaches get back?
Departure from the park is at 10 p.m., after the show, and the drop-offs run in a circuit from there. One traveller staying in Cancún described a long string of hotel stops before theirs. If an early start the next morning matters, that is the fact to plan around.
What are the Xcaret underground rivers?
Channels cut through the limestone by water, running roughly 16 feet below ground for about 656 yards, at an average depth of five feet. You float them with the current, in a life jacket, past rock walls, bat caves and openings to the sky, and you come out near the sea. Most people who write about a day here name them first.
How many of the underground rivers can you swim?
Two. The operator's own page names three — Blue, Pre-Hispanic and Manatee — and states that the Manatee river is closed to visitors, which is why several tour listings advertising three underground rivers are out of date. Two is still a long swim, and there are exits part-way along both.
Do I have to wear a life jacket?
Yes, throughout the underground rivers, and the park supplies it. Inner tubes come with the ticket as well; a locker does not. The operator prices one at $5.99 with a $10 refundable deposit. Strong swimmers are not exempt: the rule covers everyone in the water.
Is snorkel gear included, and is there a deposit?
Rental is $10.99 and the deposit is $25, refunded when you hand the gear back, or $10 if your ticket is Xcaret Plus. Several tour fares fold the gear in and still ask for the deposit at the counter, so carry a card for it. Bringing your own mask avoids both.
What is Xcaret México Espectacular, and how long is it?
Xcaret México Espectacular is the park's closing performance, staged in the Gran Tlachco theatre with a cast the operator puts at more than 300. It runs two hours and moves chronologically from the pre-Columbian era through the Conquest, the colonial centuries, independence and the Revolution, closing with mariachi and the park's own singers. It is included with every grade of ticket.
Do I need water shoes?
They are worth packing. The river floor is sharp in places, and one traveller found sliders and flip-flops turned away at the entry to the water. Trainers you do not mind soaking will do the same job.
What is the best time of year to visit Xcaret?
March is the driest month on the nearest official record and October by far the wettest, with nearly 290 mm. June to November is the Atlantic hurricane season, and the same stretch carries the warmest, wettest weeks. If rain would spoil it for you, aim for February to April.
What is the night ticket, and when does it start?
Xcaret at Night lets you in from four in the afternoon and keeps you until closing. The underground rivers still shut at 5:30, the aquarium at 6:45 and the butterfly pavilion and aviary at 6:30, so an afternoon arrival costs you most of the water. What it buys instead is the horse show, the flyers, the pre-Hispanic dances and the evening performance.
Is there a discount for booking online?
Grupo Xcaret advertises up to 15% off for buying early on its own site, without saying what qualifies as early or which tickets are covered. No comparable discount is published for the tour listings. Treat it as a reason to book ahead rather than a number to count on.
Do children pay?
Children aged four and under go in free. Above that the park prices by age band and publishes no figures, and most tour listings quote a child fare only once you pick a date. Add the children at booking rather than at the gate, where nobody will be quoting you a package price.
Is any tour here non-refundable?
One: the cenote day that meets at the park and does not tour it. Its listing marks the sale final, which means no refund and no date change whatever the reason. Everything else carries the 24-hour free cancellation window.
Why does the same park cost $113 on one tour and $280 on another?
Because the fares are buying different things. The cheapest is entry alone, and leaves you to get yourself to the gate at km 282; the dearest add a coach from your hotel, a guide, a meal, the Plus Area, or a second park on a second day. Read what the fare covers before you read the number.
Is the park worth the money?
Travellers split on this, and the split is about the extras rather than the park. The ones who enjoyed it most swam the rivers early, ate at a buffet already paid for and stayed for the show; the ones who felt cheated arrived on a basic ticket and found the snorkel trip, the photos and the dolphins charged again. Decide the grade first.
How far is the park from Playa del Carmen?
It is the nearest town, and the difference shows in the pickup time: days from Playa del Carmen collect around 8:30 in the morning against 6:30 or 7:00 from Cancún, and run 11 to 12 hours rather than 12 to 14. If you are staying in Playa, you gain roughly two hours of your day.
Is there parking, and is it free?
Yes, and the listings that mention it call it free. That matters if you are driving yourself on the entry ticket, since the gate sits directly on Highway 307 with its own car park. Nothing about parking is stated in the coach fares, because they set you down at the entrance.
Can I get there by bus?
The ADO coach network runs the length of Highway 307 and the park sits on it, so arriving under your own steam is realistic if you hold an entry ticket. What no bus solves is the return: the evening show ends at closing, which is long after the last useful departure in either direction. Plan the way back before you plan the way out.
Where do the tour buses pick up if I am in an apartment?
Operators collect from hotels on their own list and assign a meeting point to everyone else, and several reserve the right to do that even for addresses that are on the list. One listing's published meeting point named a tour office that had already moved. Confirm the point and the time the day before, in writing.
What time do the underground rivers close?
At 5:30 p.m., every day of the year, whatever time the park itself shuts. That is the reason an early arrival is worth more here than at most attractions, and the reason an afternoon ticket buys a different day rather than a shorter one. Several travellers recommend doing the water first, before the crowds.
How much walking is there?
A great deal — this is a large park laid out along a coast, and one traveller logged 23,000 steps in a day. The paths are colour-coded in tiles, which is how most people find their way rather than by map. Comfortable shoes matter more than a plan.
Is there a beach?
Yes, along with bays, coves and natural pools, and access to all of them comes with every ticket. Sun loungers, hammocks and rest areas are included too. It is where most people end up between the rivers and the evening.
What is Mundo de Niños?
The children's water park inside the grounds — a set of slides, bridges and shallow pools built for small children rather than adults. It is included with every grade of ticket. Families with under-tens tend to lose an afternoon to it.
Is the park wheelchair accessible?
The grounds are largely flat and paved and several listings mark themselves accessible, but the park publishes no access statement covering the rivers, the boats or the theatre, and one listing claims wheelchair access on a day built around rappelling. Ask the operator about the specific activities you want before you book.
Can I bring my own food and drink?
The park sells food at restaurants inside and does not publish a policy on bringing your own. What is certain is that meals are not in the Basic ticket and are in the Plus one, so the cheapest way to eat is to decide that at booking. Water is the thing most people wish they had carried.
What time should I arrive?
As near to the 8:30 a.m. opening as you can manage. The rivers shut at 5:30 p.m., the park is big enough that nobody sees all of it, and the crowds build through the middle of the day. Travellers who enjoyed it most did the water first and left the animals and the show for the afternoon.
When is the Festival of Life and Death?
From 30 October to 2 November 2026, its twentieth edition, with Guanajuato as the guest state and a gala concert sold separately on 31 October. Discounted admissions exist for residents of Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche and Guanajuato. No price is published for any of it.
Is the Travesía Sagrada Maya happening in 2026?
No. Grupo Xcaret suspended the 2026 Travesía Sagrada Maya in April, saying it did so voluntarily to avoid the event being read as a confrontation with the cultural-heritage authorities after a Supreme Court ruling on the use of Maya symbology. Around 333 rowers had already been cast. The company has not said whether it returns.
Is anything closed on Sundays?
The park itself opens every day of the week. What changes is the combination tickets: on the two-day combination, the Chichén Itzá and Xplor legs are not offered on Sundays, so a Sunday booking narrows your choice to the other parks. Nothing inside Xcaret is affected.
